💜 Listen to that feeling deep within and to your hearts wisdom.

Up until a year ago, I was still struggling with heart break and sadness. I had picked myself back up, worked hard on myself, had so many amazing moments, experiences, things and people to be grateful for, and proud of. And on the surface, I was ok, but deep down, I still didn’t feel quite like me. Kent wasn’t where I was meant to be.

I knew I needed to make a big change to get my sparkle back. I knew New Zealand was for me, my heart was desperate for this adventure. I leaned in, sold my business, my home, my belongings, gave away my dog (😭) and turned up with no plan, knowing no one.

And my first year living here has been more beautiful than I could ever have imagined.

So be brave, listen to your heart, and start your next chapter, whatever that looks like for you. It’s going to be even better than you could possibly know. ❤️ Thanks for reading xx

🩵 Playful dolphins who take it in turns to glide under my board the faster I paddle

🩶 Huge graceful rays who glide below the paddle board

🩷 Sperm whales cruising in the bay around me

This little hidden inlet in the Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand is something special. You can only access here with a SUP, kayak, small boat (or kayaking tour) on the high tide, and it’s the perfect spot for baby seals and rays to bask in the sun and sheltered water 👌

Seals are super curious and playful ones but they are also wild and a protected species. As always, never approach or pester wildlife or feed them, and only let them come to you. 💛

Another girls trip out one of our fave spots just outside of Nelson.

We made it to Angelus hut and the next morning, got up early and hit the snow to get up to one of the nearby peaks for sunrise, icy snow conditions, bluebird skies and an epic view over the the national park, Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotorua and miles miles more.

We risked it for a biscuit and walked back over the frozen lake 😅

Another girls trip out one of our fave spots just outside of Nelson.

We made it to Angelus hut and the next morning, got up early and hit the snow to get up to one of the nearby peaks for sunrise, icy snow conditions, bluebird skies and an epic view over the the national park, Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotorua and miles miles more.

⭐️ Ask locals and do your research into local laws, rules and knowledge

⭐️ Have a lesson or do a safety course to get clued up

⭐️ Check tide times - go in the direction of the tide, not against it.

Paddle an hour either side of high tide means you can paddle in and out always with the tide in the slackest water

⭐️ Check the tide height - is there enough water to do your paddle route?

The biggest difference in heights between high and low tide means the more water is moving and stronger tidal flow

⭐️ Light onshore winds will blow you back to the beach, avoid offshore winds which can make the ocean look flat and calm

⭐️ Swell and waves can challenge your balance and make it hard to get on and off the water in surf

⭐️ Paddle in your limits, and if you’re not sure, stay on land this time

⭐️ Write down the conditions, tides, winds, weather, your route and how it felt to help you learn for next time

What a stunner of a coastal paddle - the 17km from Sumner to Cass Bay, passing the dramatic cliffs of Godley Head - one of the top ten New Zealand coastal defence heritage sites.

From crampon techniques to self arrest to reading the terrain and avalanche awareness, I was in my bloody element and left feeling so much more knowledgable and prepared. And let’s not mention the absolute feast every evening 😋

If you’re thinking of dipping your toes into winter adventures in the mountains, get yourself clued up and confident in your environment. Can’t wait to get out in the snow next week and practice 🙌

🎣 Ever tried fishing off your SUP?

⬇️ Here’s what I learnt from my first time…

⭐️ Mussels not only make great bait to get started but if you don’t catch anything to eat, they’re the perfect feed 😜

⭐️ Know the local fishing rules about catch size and limits around where to fish and how much you can take as well

⭐️ Fishing off a SUP is super peaceful and relaxing on a calm sunny day whether you paddle, drift or anchor

⭐️ Keep your knife in your buoyancy aid ready for easy access and a tow line if you want to tether up

⭐️ Take an experienced fisherman or woman who knows what they’re doing to learn from… Super handy when you accidentally catch three small sharks that you need to unhook and release (all were fine)😳

⭐️ Mussels caught yourself taste even more delicious - but bigger isn’t always better, make sure they’re cooked, and don’t forget to check for crabs 🦀 😜

Flowing from the heart of the southern alps, the clear, blue Waimakariri River is an absolute stunner, braiding its way through the Canterbury plains framed by the snow topped mountains.

New Zealand is filled with so many incredible paddle spots, but finding paddle info here can be hard. Trusting golden oldies like our 1995 South Island Rivers guide book worked a treat here. 💛 Doing our own research, asking locals, plotting our paddle on @ordnancesurvey, and checking the water levels online before we head over… and she was good to go 💃 And what a beauty we had!

It might still feel like a dream… but I can’t believe that I arrived in New Zealand on my own, knowing no one, six months today 😮

Two awesome jobs, incredible new friends, epic hikes, jaw dropping scenery, amazing wildlife encounters, and finally a place to live - my heart is so full! 🤗

I remember someone telling me ‘it’s just a dream, of course you’d love to go, wouldn’t anyone? It doesn’t mean we just can go and do what we want all the time’. Well, why not?

Here’s a little reminder to just do it, whatever your dream may be. Listen to your gut feeling and act on it, the sacrifices will be worth it, the worries are normal and your strength will carry you through an amazing journey 💛

I came here to push myself in the outdoors and this is only just the start… I can’t wait to see how the next six months unfold ✌️
